3.2 million students reported taking a course online compared to 2.3 million the previous year.

More prevalant while working on associate degrees.

96% of institutions with enrollments above 15,000 students offer some form of online instruction. More

than twice the rate of much smaller institutions.

Two-thirds of the largest institutions offer fully online programs.

Significant barriers are noted, including lack of student discipline, perceived lack of demand,

faculty acceptance and faculty time.

Useful classifications based upon the proportion of content presented online. 0% - traditional, 1-29%

web facilitated and 30-79% blended and 80-100% online.

Respondences from the Chief Academic Officers represent a steadily growing recognition that online

education will play a role in the long-term strategy of the institution.
